Won-Ho Lee, Production Director for Umicore’s battery cathode materials operations in Korea, has received a commendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) at the 2026 Battery Industry Day ceremony on October 29.

The annual event, hosted by MOTIE and organized by the Korea Battery Industry Association (KBIA), recognizes individuals for their contributions to technological advancement and strengthening the global competitiveness of Korea’s battery industry.

Since joining Umicore in 2018, Lee has held responsibility for cathode active materials production and operations in Korea. His work has included the qualification and stabilization of production lines and supporting infrastructure, helping strengthen the reliability and competitiveness of Umicore’s Korean operations.

Among the achievements recognized were the qualification of cathode active materials production lines and oxygen supply facilities (Oxygen Line Qualification). Approximately 90% of output meets the quality standards of major automotive customers in Europe and the United States.

Under Lee’s leadership, Umicore’s Korean operations have also contributed to Korea’s carbon neutrality goals through eco-friendly manufacturing innovations that reduced annual electricity consumption by approximately 669 MWh and carbon emissions by 306 metric tons. The site has also recorded 800 accident-free days, reflecting its continued commitment to workplace safety.

“It is especially meaningful and an honor that Umicore employees have once again been recognized for their contributions to Korea’s battery industry,” said Sang-Hoon Park, Managing Director of Umicore Battery Materials Korea. “This award reflects the dedication of our teams and our longstanding commitment to Korea’s battery industry. We will continue to work closely with our customers and partners, contributing our technology and manufacturing expertise to the development of Korea’s battery value chain.”
